I4-GREEN drives and boosts green, circular, and social tech deployment through joint investments. The I4-GREEN consortium works to unleash the green innovation power of EU Interregional Ecosystems, with the goal of reducing EU dependence on imports of Critical Raw Materials and the negative impact on the environment of their extraction and processing (European Critical Raw Materials Act).
Stems from a S3 network and scales into a unique interregional ecosystem, a node for the green transformation of extractive industries and the emergence of an EU sustainable mining value chain.
CRITICAL RAW MATERIALS ACT
WHY
ECONOMIC AND STRATEGIC BACKGROUND
-
Criticality Raw Materials for the EU
-
Many occurrences and exploitation opportunities or ree and crm
WHAT
ENVIRONMENTAL URGENCY: MAKING MINING GREEN, CIRCULAR AND SUSTAINABLE
ENSURING THE CIRCULAR AND SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY OF SPECIFIC RAW MATERIALS IN THE SOUTH OF THE UE
HOW
I4-GREEN ALIGNMENT TO THE I3 SCOPE, GENERAL OBJECTIVES AND PRIORITIES
I4-GREEN IS BUILT AROUND FIVE KEY PILLARS
Interregional pooling of complementary capabilities
Circular economy and green process tech
Breaktrhough technology brought to scale
Making EU mining green and competitive
Fostering EU Resilience and Policy Alignment
I4-GREEN
is an industry-driven project that includes two green strands:
-
IRON HOLM OAK PILOT is an industrial mining project for the recovery of critical minerals. The project's value proposition is the recovery of endogenous resources, incorporating modern technologies, under high environmental, social and economic sustainability criteria. It is managed by consortium partners GEVORA and LEONOR. The Iron Holm Oak Pilot will be a key example, for the EU, of a cutting-edge technology to recover rare earth minerals from iron mining waste, reducing environmental impact and alleviating the EU's dependence on foreign rare earth elements (particularly for Neodymium). IHO directly involves 3 regions: Extremadura (ES), Andalusia (ES) and Alentejo (PT).
-
The ATALAYA /LAIN TECH PILOT will innovate by developing a green technology for extracting strategic raw materials from low-quality ores. It is run by consortium partners ATALAYA and LAIN TECH, who have developed and will demonstrate a hydrometallurgical solution for the extraction of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, lead and platinum group metals.
